Social Media – Where Do You Start?

Social Media by definition is a Social Venue to connect with people, all over the world, or in the same room.  Social Media at its core is just a way for all of us to connect with one another. Some would argue that it is killing our personal relationships, but many will say it has strengthened their connection with more people throughout their world. What is known is that social media is growing and will continue to grow for the interconnectivity of all people with an Internet connection.

Where should you start?
The whole idea here is to connect right? I would say start with what I consider the big three: Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. These networks will likely have more people you connect with than many of the other networks.

Can you explain these networks in terms I can understand?
Sure.
Twitter to me is like yelling in a cafeteria full of people. You want to say something that people will listen to, and engage you with, but you may not know everyone in the room.
Facebook is more like a table in that same Cafeteria.  You know all the people at your table, some better than others, and you talk to them and want to know more intimate details about their lives, as they do about yours.
LinkedIn is the Cafeteria Table at work. You know everyone at the table, and you know they may be able to help you push your career forward.

Start with these three sites. Find friends, coworkers or just interesting people to follow. It may take some time, but soon enough you will feel connected.
